Promoting
Academic Outcomes for All Students
In November 2002 a multi-site interactive conference about the future
of school psychology was held. The University of Indiana hosted on-site
participants, and others participated via online and videoconference
hook-ups. The conference was co-sponsored by the National Association
of School Psychologists (NASP), Division 16 of the American
Psychological Association, the International School Psychology
Association (ISPA), the Council of Directors of School Psychology
Programs (CDSPP), the Trainers of School Psychologists (TSP), the
Society for the Study of School Psychology (SSSP), the American Board
of School Psychology (ABSP), and the American Academy of School
Psychology (AASP).
The 2002 conference was the first U.S. national forum for the
discussion of school psychology since the Olympia conference in 1979.
In planning the conference, the Future Co-Chairs recognized that many
things had changed in U.S. education since then. As a result of the
conference activities, five major areas of focus were developed:
1. Improved Academic Competence and School Success for All Children
2. Improved Social-Emotional Functioning for All Children
3. Enhanced family-school partnerships and parental involvement in
schools
4. More effective education and instruction for all learners
5. Increased child and family services in schools that promote health
and mental health and are integrated with community services
Over time the five
focus areas were collapsed into three main areas:
